United Spirits Limited, abbreviated to USL, is an Indian alcoholic beverages company, and the world’s second-largest spirits company by volume. It is a subsidiary of Diageo, and headquartered at UB Tower in Bangalore, Karnataka. USL exports its products to over 37 countries.
The company originated as a trading company called McDowell and Company (also known as McDowell & Co, McDowell or McDowell’s), founded in India in 1826 by Angus McDowell, a Scot. The company imported liquor, tobacco products, and other consumer goods into India to serve the needs of British people stationed there. United Spirits Ltd. engages in the manufacture, sale, and distribution of beverage alcohol. Their brand portfolios include Scotch whisky, IMFL whisky, brandy, rum, vodka, gin and wine. It operates through the India and Outside India segments.
The Executive Committee of the Company which has been identified as the Chief Operating Decision Maker of the Company assesses performance and allocates resources for the business of the group as a whole and hence the management considers Group’s business activities as a single operating segment. Their shareholding pattern consists of Promoters and Promoter Group having 56.76% of shares, Public having 14.33% shares, Government having 1.73% following by FII’s having 18.98% shares and DII’s with 8.21% shares.
